When to Schedule an Emergency Appointment

Certain conditions and injuries call for an eye doctor's immediate attention:

Corneal Abrasions

A corneal abrasion is a scratch on the cornea (the dome-shaped front surface of the eye) that causes redness, sensitivity to light, and general discomfort for the patient. It happens when an object like a debris particle, fingernail, or makeup brush comes into contact with the eye.

We are here to provide the care you need when the unexpected occurs.

Pink Eye

Conjunctivitis, or pink eye, is an inflammation of the clear film (conjunctiva) that covers the whites of the eyes (sclera). Patients suffering from pink eye experience redness, discharge, and blurred vision. There are different causes of pink eye. One is bacterial, which is a very dangerous form of the condition. If left untreated, it can lead to vision loss. Another cause is viral, which is extremely contagious.

When in doubt, give us a call at (310) 340-6925 and we can help determine if you are experiencing an emergency.

Retinal Detachment

Retinal detachment is a very serious emergency eye condition in which the retina (the light-sensitive tissue that sends messages to the brain through the optic nerve) pulls away from the wall of the eye. Without prompt care, it can lead to permanent vision loss.

Subconjunctival Hemorrhages

When you break a blood vessel between your conjunctiva and sclera, you may experience red patches on the whites of your eyes. These are subconjunctival hemorrhages. While most clear on their own, some hemorrhages occur as a result of a severe eye infection or trauma to your eye. These need to be treated immediately.

Vitreous Floaters

Floaters are spots or cobwebs in your field of vision that can be annoying, but are usually harmless. However, a sudden, rapid onset of floaters can indicate retinal detachment.

Symptoms That Can Wait until Normal Hours

Just because you have redness, irritation, or swelling in your eyes does not mean you have to worry. These symptoms do not always call for an urgent trip to the doctor. These symptoms could simply be a sign of allergies or other non-contagious eye conditions. However, when in doubt, give us a call and we can help determine if you are experiencing an emergency.
